Musical Saw - Quick tutorial
This is a very short tutorial to explain the basics of the saw. You will need some practice to find the notes.
Please notice that I have an old musical saw "La Scie Musicale", but it also works with a regular hand saw. The range will only be narrower, and be careful with the teeth !

Crépuscule for string orchestra (with score)
Переглядів 1,7 тис.2 роки тому
This is a short piece composed between February and May 2021. I have played and recorded all the tracks - 13 violins, 4 violas, 4 cellos and 2 basses - and added a little bit of virtual instruments (Cinematic Studio Strings) to make the sound "thicker". I hope that you will enjoy listening at it, and that you will have the curiosity to look at the score in detail.
Dorantine : Lahuta and Cimbalom
Переглядів 50 тис.2 роки тому
This is a simple melody played on a Lahuta (one-stringed fiddle from Albania), also called Gusle in Serbia, accompanied by a Cimbalom, a Zarb, two Frame Drums and a double-bass drone. NB : I never record music and video at the same time... so there are some delays between my fingers on screen and the notes you hear... please be forgiving !

This is a composition based on the raga Bhairav, and the ten beats rhythm Jhaptal. I used various Indian instruments (sarod, sarangi, sitar, shehnai, bansuri, tablas and swarsangam), mixed with a string orchestra. All recorded at home by myself. I'm not pretending to compose Indian music, I'm not specialized enough. I only know some basic aspects of this wonderful music, and used them to create...

    You are in error my dear very talented friend. The Low Whistle is an English invention and derives from the old Anglo-Saxon Whistles of the dark ages. It is merely popular in Irish music. As an Anglo-Cymru, (I have family in both camps) I feel strongly about this. We don't get much Folk music credit, but we deserve this one. Although an honourable mention to Finbar Furey, would be in order.

      Yes a lot an eastern wind instruments start on the fifth note of the scale. That's the case for the Hulusi, but also for the Indian bansuri for example. The note shown on the instrument is the note you achieve by closing the left hand holes only.

    I need more information on this. The high tones on this sound nothing like the lahuta/gusle. I also noticed that your string seems to be going under the bridge rather than on top of it (or is it the older style where it is drilled through?). Have you adapted the lahuta to get these smooth sounds? Maybe also changed the string? There was a famous Serbian cellist who played the gusle in this manner (and with an orchestra) in the '80s, but even his high notes had that signature warble/tremolo/scraping that this instrument is known for. This almost sounds like a rabab or one of the other eastern variants which have lost their horse-hair in exchange for steel strings. Please share more information about how you've achieved this sound.

    • @narnodel2
      @narnodel2 5 місяців тому

      Thank you for your very interesting questions ! You are right about the hole drilled in the bridge, this is the case on this instrument. A friend of mine has a lahuta with the string passing at the top of the bridge, like a violin. But I don't think that changes the sound very much. About the high notes, the only adaptation I made was to make the string thin by removing some hairs. If I remember well, I only had about 20-30 hairs in my string for this recording, which allowed me to achieve high notes. By adding hairs I can easily play a fifth lower than that. I also cheated (a bit) : I never record the sound and the video at the same time. And for the sound recording, I used a violin bow which gives better control on the pressure and longer notes. But I decided to play with the traditional bow for the video ! Nevertheless, that doesn't change the sound very much, it is just a little bit easier for me. Another thing that changes the sound : the mixing. I added reverb, an equalization to boost the high frequencies... I hope I answered your questions !
